Abstract EN

This study aims to explore the other uncommon type of ‘negation’ - implied negation (aka non-absolute negation).

It is so called because the method of negation is not clear; it is rather understood from the context.

In other words, it is not the opposite of ‘affirmation’; that is to say, it might be contradicted by another phrase within the same context.

It overlaps with absolute negation.

It is understood from the speaker’s style and tone of voice, without being indicated by the use of any particular word or phrase of negation.

The style should be brief; because the implied negative content is evident from its pronunciation, unlike the absolute negation which involves the use of an overt negative indicator.

Its methods include the following: 1- Exception: because it involves the exclusion of the second item from the first.

2- Concession: where the second part of the sentence, opposes the first in negation and affirmation.

It also involves the negation of what is thought to be affirmative at the first glance.

3- Distancing: it is against nearness; it also involves implied negation.

4- Reproach: it indicates warning against committing mistakes The study has adopted the descriptive method in presenting various grammarians’ views concerning implied negation.

The study attempts to gather the methods and tools of implied negation in one location
