In this study, many pharmaceutical formulations have been explored containing Glimepiride (GLM), a poorly water soluble anti diabetic drug type II, to enhance its aqueous solubility and dissolution characteristics.

Solid dispersions (SD) and Physical Mixtures were prepared from the drug with water soluble or dispersible carriers as poloxamer 188, Poly Ethylene Glycol PEG 4000, Poly VinylPyrrolidone PVP–K30, Hydroxyl Propyl Methyl Cellulose HPMC, and Glyceryl Mono Stearate GMS, with drug to carrier ratios of 1:19 respectively.

In vitro dissolution studies were carried out, according to USP 34, which showed that all the preparations of water soluble carriers were effective to improve the dissolution rates of Glimepiride when compared with the drug alone.

The solid dispersions and physical mixtures could be successfully used for the improvement of the dissolution of Glimepiride, the highest dissolution rate (94 %) after 60 minutes was obtained with PVP-K30 compared with the drug alone (7.6 %) after 60 minutes
