Abstract EN

This study aims at identifying the factors that could hinder the development and growth of Eco-lodges in Egypt.

It also aims at standing on the extent to which owners and managers of the existing Eco-lodges are aware of different dimensions of the Environment management systems and the way this affect their management of their properties.

A case study methodology was used to reach the objectives of this study.

Data collection took place in El Wadi Elgedid, Fayoum, and South Sinai Govemorates.

Six different hotels were investigates from May 2010 to October 2010.

Structured in depth face-to face interview was conducted with general managers and owners of the selected sample.

The results revealed that one of the most important factors that hinder the development of Eco-lodges in Egypt is the lack of a clear strategic vision for the development of this type of hotels.

In addition, the lack of knowledge about the environment management systems has contributed negatively in the manifestation of different environment related problems.

The results also revealed that investors are reluctant to build Eco-lodges because of the bureaucracy and the different license issuing bodies they refer to.

The study offered a set of recommendations that could improve the development of this category of hotels.
