Abstract EN

The usage of Arabic script in central Africa prior the advent of the European colonizers and during colonization has remained an unknown phenomenon.

Nevertheless, many references published during that era, especially those whish are kept in European museums, e.g.

the Royal Museum in Tervurin (Belgium), state that Arabic and SwahiliArabic were used in that region after the arrival of the Sudanese traders from the east and the west and the Swahili traders from the east.

This was reported to have taken place during the last decades of the 19th century.

These languages were used in correspondence and for religions teaching.

Since the turn of the 19th c, however, the colonial authorities, especially the missionaries, were anxious about this state of affairs.

This anxiety led to a fast deterioration and marginalization of Arabic and Swahili-Arabic.
