Abstract EN

Symbolism in Ibn Khafaja's poetry displays some deep and psychological references hidden under the shades of silent nature and its constituents.

Using symbolism, the poet could express himself and his troubled soul which ranged between optimism on one hand and pessimism on the other.

This paper presents the psychological symbolism the poet has encountered which is depicted in two sides.

The first one is positive and represented by his early youth life; the days of happiness, fun and pleasure away from woes and calamities that used to happen in his time.

His first concern was to engage with and describe the beautiful nature and be immersed in joy, cheerfulness and entertainment.

The second side was negative and represented by his late life; the days of suffering, pains, sorrow, and alienation accompanied by longing, emotions, and memories.

All these symbols were employed through the silent nature which was his first haven, regardless of his mood and circumstances, with an unleashed imagination and a creative style that is mostly based on personification.
