Communal lands were among the causes that remained one of the most ambiguous questions of the colonial land system in Algeria.

And this, despite its primordial importance in the daily life of the Algerian Fellah.

This question links the latter with the colonial system, because it allows it to control this land by renting.

Yet this land belonged to his ancestors before being confiscated.

The question of renting communal land presents a unique case study to study the operating system of men throughout history.

We will therefore try to clarify this ambiguity to the readers.

Our study deals with the case of the communal lands of Douar Messer attached to the mixed commune of Mekerra, in the district of sidi Bel Abbes.
