Abstract EN

The focus of this study is on reviewing the literature on Feminization of Poverty in Saudi Arabia.

Since the emergence of the term in Peterson’s writing in 1987, many studies have been conducted on poor women to determine the characteristics and causes of women’s poverty.

Many studies, moreover, have accepted or rejected the term.

The aim of this study is to prove the existence of feminization of poverty in Saudi Arabia, based on the official statistics of the national Social Security which reflects the high percentage of women on Social Security data base.

The study aims furthermore, to explore the characteristics of poor women in Saudi Arabia which are mainly widowed women, and those who are married, their husbands are unemployed, women living in middle sized families consists of five children and has divorced and/or widowed daughters who are the breadwinners of their own families and the care takers of its members.

Those women have no stable income and the Social Security allowance is their main income, have low educational level and/or illiterate, they also lack occupational skills that might support additional income.

Finally, these women either own traditional homes or live in rented houses.
