Arabic vowels undergo alternation during the process of morphological derivation.

This alternation involves deletion, replacement, and vowel movement.

However, vowels are not affected by alternation in many cases despite the fact that they have all the reasons to be alternated.

This paper analyzes such cases and explains the justifications suggested by classical Arab grammarians as reasons for speakers of Arabic to preserve vowels in certain instances but change them in others.

The research lists 11 reasons suggested by classical Arab grammarians to account for vowel preservation in the cases identified in this study.

These include the deep structure of alternated forms, saving structure from loss or ambiguity, saving structure from over-deletion, distinguishing verbs from nouns, considering the meanings of morphological structures, discussing the differences between word meaning and the morpho syntactic meaning of the structure, considering morphological exceptions, priority of preservation or alternation, the consistency of morphological rules, structures similarity, and the distinguishing features of verbal structures and other structures.
