This paper examines the notion of the unexpected in the torture verses in the Holy Quran in the light of their impact on the reader or audience.

The unexpected is presented as a textual artistic element that gives Quranic verses rich connotations.

The analysis reveals that the unexpected takes the form of using words in unfamiliar contexts and the employment of an unexpected diction for the reader, such as the description of food and drink of people in hell as if they were in a 'nozol' (hostel) and the mentioning of 'bushra' (glad tidings) in the context of torture.

The unexpected also occurs in the context of the unbelievers and this occurrence contradicts with what is familiar to the reader.

The paper concludes that the unexpected enriches the connotation of Quranic verses and establishes a stronger bond with the audience, attracting them and even surprising them.
