Abstract EN

This article explores the nature of the relationship between the image and written texts in the Arab tradition of drawing on glass before Western Colonization.

To this end, the status of writing within the art of traditional imagery was examined in order to detect the functions of the linguistic message accompanying the narrative picture.

This written discourse, which is one of the structural components of the image itself, plays a transition role between an oral narrative heritage and a visual one.

This subject extends into the various manifestations of Arabic modern art, particulary just after the independence state, where the concepts of identity, authenticity and local cultural heritage had an influential role in shaping the questions of aesthetic modernity and the emergence of artistic styles.
