Abstract EN

The killing of Hujr ibn Adi Al-Kindi by Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan in 51 AH/671 AD could be seen as a mere example of the execution of political opponents, which later became prevalent in Islamic history.

However, when it happened, it was unprecedented for a Muslim Caliph to kill a member of the ummah on the basis of his political views.

This made views on the incident defining of some Islamic groups (or sects).

This study examines the various accounts of this event in medieval Islamic sources, with the objective of understanding how Muslim – particularly Sunni – historians handled events in which the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad took part .

Furthermore, through an analysis of contemporary fatwas on the murder of Hujr, the study presents an example of ideological readings of history, demonstrating at the same time the importance of other Islamic fields of knowledge for the study of Islamic history.

Not only did these fields overlap with the presentation and interpretation of history, but they also determine a number of conceptions in light of which which historians of Islam read early Islamic history.
