Abstract EN

Background: Nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one of the important infections among patients on hemodialysis, and is associated with increased risk of infections, morbidity and mortality.

Until now, it has not been investigated or evaluated at our center with regards to its incidence and prevalence.

Method: This was a prospective study at King Fahd University Hospital conducted over a one-and-half-year period.

A total of 139 patients were enrolled in the study, and a nasal swab was taken from the anterior nares of each patient at zero, 3 and 6 months.

Results: The incidence of nasal MRSA was 0.7, 3.6 and 1.4 at 0, 3 and 6 months, respectively, with cumulative percentage ranging 96.4-99.3%.

The risk factors were diabetes mellitus, which was present in 83% of the patients, hypertension (present in 93%), permacatheter (100% of patients), and other site infections (23.3%).

Conclusion: Decolonization using chlorhexidine shampoo once daily for seven days and intranasal mupirocin ointment twice daily can be used to decrease new incidence.

Regular screening for nasal methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) depends on the incidence; once the incidence is reduced, screening can be done at longer intervals.
