Abstract EN

The French leftist press, in all its forms: daily newspapers or political and cinematic magazines, has played a leading role in expressing the abuses which spread during the Algerian war.

The political magazines are deemed to be the first to deal and oppose the war in Algeria and expose the methods used by French army such as torture, detention, internment, population gathering, which violate the international human law and the constitution of the republic.

However, the leftist cinematic magazines were late in dealing with the Algerian war until 1960 and this was because of the control and the measures the French authority used to prevent cinema from using propaganda to expose the French excesses and abuses in Algeria.

In spite of those measures, some leftist and especially extremist leftist journalists and cinematic critics made use of that field to fight for the Algerian issue, disclose the French repressive policy, and revolt against the control put on certain films related to the Algerian issue.

They have published many articles in political newspapers dealing with the issue such as the Cinema Mirror, the Method, and the Positive.

Furthermore, many cinematic critics like Paul Tirard Louis and Marcel Martin revolted through their writing of political articles which objected the French policy in Algeria.
