Abstract EN

Background& Objective: the appearance of one’s hair is central to feelings of attractiveness and selfesteem for many, so the disturbance in this appearance will reflect upon the psychosocial aspects of the patient and thus on the quality of his life.

The androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) is the most common cause of hair loss in men, as it affects about 50% of adult men, so it may be considered the biggest threat in this aspect, but there are no epidemiological studies that study the actual effect of androgenetic alopecia on the quality of life of the patients in Syria.

study the effect of the androgenetic alopecia on quality of life of the Syrian male patients.

Materials & Methods: 69 patients with androgenetic alopecia as outpatients of Dermatology and Venereology University Hospital in Damascus.

The hospital receives patients from all of Syria.

Who were followed up before using appropriate treatment and 50 healthy adult men underwent an assessment of quality of life according to a questionnaire specific to hair loss.

The results of the two groups were compared to study the effect of androgenetic alopecia on the quality of life of the patients.

Results: 50% of patients expressed big to great concern about hair loss continuing.

The mean score of quality of life assessment in men with androgenetic alopecia was 55.9±13.1 whereas the mean score of quality of life assessment in healthy men was 22.6±14.2.

The quality of life was much worse in younger patient and in long duration hair loss cases.

Discussion: This study showed that the quality of life in Syrian men with androgenetic alopecia was decreased compared to the quality of life in healthy men, the psychological aspect affected more than the functional aspect and was the main reason that makes patients of hair loss accept any treatment.

Conclusion: The large decrease in quality of life in men with androgenetic alopecia imposes the importance of the idea that the treatment should include psychological intervention in advanced cases of hair loss in which quality of life maybe affected so badly
