Abstract EN

The religious monuments have occupied the highest and foremost place among the types of monuments erected by the Ottomans in the various cities of Algeria and including Oran, as was the case during the previous eras, that Islam encouraged its construction for the great reward.

It is worth mentioning that the architectural activity that took place in Oran on the Ottoman era is much greater than what has been written about it or what there remained architectural effects despite the short period of Ottoman rule, as the studies carried out in this field by the French and the Spaniards in particular neglected that period, and on the other hand the occupier carried out a very extensive demolition campaign that destroyed most of what was built during Ottoman era, including the new city, which was built by the Bey Mohammed El-Kebir on the right bank of the Wad al-Rihi , which We have only a very small number of architectural landmarks left, perhaps the most prominent being the Hassan Pasha Mosque.

The mosque of Pasha is one of the important archaeological and historical monuments of Oran.

Mohammed Bey began its construction after liberating the city from the Spanish occupation, and the work was completed in 1796.

The mosque of Pasha is the only mosque in the remaining archaeological city constructed according to the Ottoman-style expatriates.

This manifests itself mainly through its prayer room and its central dome surrounded by smaller domes on each side and also through its polygonal minaret, which is therefore not different in terms of its characteristics in many of these Ottoman-style mosques which belong to the same period in other cities of Algeria.

This mosque has preserved its original character both in terms of its architectural plan and artistic decorations.

Because of its damage, in particular at the level of the prayer room, its condition requires that the authorities concerned undertake an urgent restoration process to preserve it as a cultural and historical heritage.
