Abstract EN

The study aims at investigating the impact of family factors, economic conditions and major choice on students’ falling under academic probation at Sultan Qaboos University.

The sample of the study was 619 students who were under academic probation.

The data was collected via an electronic questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

The results of the study concluded that most of the students in this study grew up in socially intact families and have good family relations.

The results also suggested the importance of marital status of the parents (whether they were living together, or separated or divorced) and the sensitivity of the role played by family circumstances and the nature of family unity and its effect on students’ low academic achievement.

In addition, the results revealed that parents’ reactions to their sons’ falling academic achievement was mostly rational though this was not always the case.

There are students who indicated that their parents did not accept their academic probation and asked about their studies in a way that lacked empathy on an ongoing basis.

The study concluded that most of the students who are under academic probation came from families of moderate and low monthly income and that some of these students are economically active (i.e.

currently employed).
