Abstract EN

The Purpose of this study is to examine the nature of the professional roles practiced in news programs in the Gulf States and Yemen official Satellite channels, which were chosen according to a geopolitical typology that includes staple Arab states, unstable Arab states and non-Arab countries.

The study examines the nature of variables related to news coverage such as topic, format, and sources of news.

Also, the study investigates the professional roles in the form of neutral and interpretive styles of reporting.

In addition, the roles of monitoring, loyalty to government, and service, civic, and entertainment roles are examined.

This study is based on several theoretical frameworks such as Professional Practice and theoretical approaches related to Professional Roles, in addition to approaches related to professional roles in news content.

Applying content analysis, the study examined 5297 news items taken from the channels chosen for this study.

Among the major results, there were four topics which were most important, comprising almost three quarters of all topics (72.6%).

Topics related to politics and government made up 24%, followed by military and national defense topics with 19.7%, followed by economic, finance, and commerce topics with 15.8%.

Also, sport topics made up 13.1% of the total news coverage.

With regards to format, the regular format of presenting the news was the most used in news programs with 74.2% of all items.

In terms of news sources, the most widely used source was the television station itself (without specifying other sources) which made up 38.5% of all items.

In second place, came official sources with 33% of the items.

In terms of professional roles in news coverage, the study found that neutral style of reporting came first with 62.9%, followed by the interpretive style of reporting with 36.8% .

There was little use of the other styles of reporting such as service, entertainment, civic, or monitoring style of reporting.

The study found statistically significant differences between the various television channels in terms of topics of news coverage, format, news sources, and the practice of professional roles related to the geopolitical typology adopted in the study.

In addition, this study confirms what has been discussed in Western studies about the large correlation between topic of news coverage, source of news, and professional roles which has an influence on the practice of professional roles.

Finally, the study recommends the examination of the role of crises and the influence they might have on the nature of news coverage and the practice of professional roles
