Abstract EN

Historically, identity is an existential issue of various human groups.

It distinguishes each group from the other as a mark on the individual.

The Somali society, like many other societies, faces a broad debate about its own identity, whether Arab or African, because of historical and geographical factors that have interacted over time as well as geographical location, which represents the convergence point between Africa and Arabian Peninsula for trade and migration.

The problem of the genealogy of Somalis emerged strongly in the colonial era when the greatest cultural transformations took place in Africa and then in the post-independence period.

The massive migration of Somalis to various regions of the world since the civil war has also deepened the problems of identity - including the Arabism of Somalia - because of the new cultures that Somali immigrants have acquired in the West and in neighboring African countries.

On this basis, the paper tries to contribute the answer to these questions about identity through investigating the elements of Arabism, and even further the reasons for joining the Arab League in 1974.

The researcher used historical and analytical descriptive method by tracing the evolution of the case historically.

The researcher believes through the results of the paper that the Somali people are bi-identity: an Arab African.

The dilemma comes when trying to cancel one of the two identities.
