Abstract EN

In the present paper, the authors attempted to discuss the concerns expressed on the potential negative impacts of extracting shale gas on water resources.

In doing so, we chose Algeria as a case study since it is amongst the most promising countries in the arena of shale gas.

After presenting a brief definition of shale gas, and discussing these concerns in the light of the findings of the published scientific papers, the authors concluded that those concerns are overestimated, especially when we take into consideration the fact that Algeria does not suffer from water scarcity on the one hand, and the possibility to use alternative techniques to the hydraulic fracturing on the other.
