Abstract EN

The Arabic dictionary has witnessed a great evolution starting from the foundation stage, up to the ancient dictionary stage, until the modern dictionary stage.

The foundation stage was characterized by the glossaries.

It ended with the Kitab al-Ayn which marked a qualitative shift from the glossaries to the dictionaries.

This book was written by Al-Khalil Al-Farahidi considered as pioneer in writing dictionaries.

In this paper we try to highlight the great role played by Abdullah Ibn Abbas in the very beginning of the foundation stage, before the “Ayn” of Al-Farahidi.

The contributions of Ibn Abbas in explaining the strange words in Quran (Gharib al Kur’an) are in fact the first seeds which led to the apparition of Arabic dictionaries.
