Abstract EN

This research is among the attempts, which hope to study the demand for urban transport services in order to rationalize the behavior of commuters and achieve sustainable transport in Algeria.

The methodology used in the present research was the survey and field research as well as the application of descriptive approach, 1009 questionnaires had been distributed in the urban areas of Algiers, the key findings of this field research show the importance of a serious study in the nature of the travel demand to provide the appropriate alternatives that live up to the expectations of commuters.

According to the search results, the modal shift behavior towards public modes would happen in the long run not only through the creation of infrastructures, the adjustment of pricing, and the improvement of the public transport services quality, but also due to the privet mode-specific ratchet effect "of the privet car" which needs a serious study of the nature of the travel deman
