Abstract EN

In this article we talked about the contribution of theoretical and applied linguistics in establishing educational programs to teachers and learners of foreign languages.

It started with definitions of the major terms then we talked about the classical method in teaching and learning foreign languages such as the grammar and translation method which was based on a contrastive analysis which consists on comparing languages at their different levels (phonetical, grammatical, and structural) levels then we moved to the modern methods which resourced from the development of linguistics, beginning by structuralism with its different branches, the we gave examples of synchronic and diachronic analysis and how they provide the foreign languages didactics with materials.

Then we talked about Chomsky’s generative and transformational theories and their contribution in teaching and learning foreign languages.
