Abstract EN

Since the earliest times, ancestor worship has played a crucial role in sub-Saharan societies in Africa’s thought and practice, such as popular religion which has always persisted even when cohabiting with Taoist, Islamic, Catholic clergy or Marxism.

This cult is supposed to maintain the bonds of communication between the living and the dead.

The latter exert a real hold on the living.

For this reason, the basis of this cult is the mystical connection with the divinized ancestors.

Nothing is done without consulting them.

Every African owes his strength and effectiveness to those ancestors.

In such societies that value seniority, the ancestor represents the most accomplished figure for the African individual.
