Abstract EN

A significant proportion of food is lost and dissipated before reaching the consumer, This fact is considered a food surplus in a world where one billion people suffer from hunger.

The latter represents in the same time depletion of water, energy, lands and necessary resources used in production, and even the working man’s third effort in the food chain.

Nowadays, Algeria is facing a sharp economic, environmental and food challenge, as agricultural and food resources are threatened by depletion and dissipation.

If the government seeks to minimize loss and waste’s size and type of agricultural crops and food, it will be able to achieve food security and reach the highest possible levels of self-sufficiency in local agricultural products, therefore there will be no risk of food dependency, The current study aims at diagnosing the reality and extent of loss and waste in agricultural crops and food in Algeria by determining its real reasons and thus, identifying the strategies and procedures that should be followed in order to reduce and limit it, Findings show that food waste and loss become a scary reality that prevents Algeria from achieving food security because a significant amount of produced and imported food is wasted, The consumer him/herself participates in this loss because of his/her irrational habits and behavior concerning food consumption.

In order to reduce food loss and waste, strategies about food security should be developed focusing on the loss in domestic and imported supply chain, wasted food by consumers, and on the appropriate procedures too.
