Abstract EN

The small and medium sized enterprises (SME) sector is one of the important sectors for the development countries in general and of the developing countries in particular, based on its contribution to creation of wealth and evolution of gross domestic product (GDP) and the promotion of foreign exportation.

In this context, this study addresses some issues concerning the SME, such as the absence of a unique definition of these entities, which explains the multiplicity and diversity of criteria to their classification, which vary from country to other.

In addition, this study, based on statistical data set, aims to show the role and importance of these SME in the Algerian economic and social development, particularly in terms of employment, value added and GDP.
