Abstract EN

This study highlighted two old literary views that addressed metaphor.

The first view focused on the substitutive metaphor while the second focused on the interactive metaphor.

A review of the opinions of old Arab critics showed a difference in perspective with regards to these two views.

The majority of Arab critics adopted metaphoric substitution, except Abdul Kaher Al_Jurjany who rejected this concept.

According to Al_Jurjany metaphor is not about transferring a word or phrase from the linguistic meaning to the rhetoric meaning.

This new view of metaphor made Al_Jurjany the founder of a new theory which was called by the new Arab critics the Interactive Theory.

Al_Jurjany s view of literary criticism focused on three factors: the environment of the metaphor, connecting the metaphoric structure with its environment, and the function of the metaphor.

The interactive theory in our current time is built on these three techniques.

This critical review shows that Al_Jurjany is the real founder of the interactive theory.
