Abstract EN

The four major cities & its suburbs in Jordan witnessed rapid population growth in the last three decades, and resulted in heavy population concentration in the north-western part of the country.

It is the purpose of this study:  To clarify the definition of suburb  To investigate the population growth rates variation in Amman, Zarqa, Irbid, Russiefeh and its suburbs.

 To measure the relationship between distance and growth rates among these cities& suburbs.

To achieve the above purpose the author analyzed the population growth rates of the above mentioned cities & suburbs using 1979,1994,2004 census data.

The author also examined the relationship between distance of suburbs &cities using Person correlation index & Student “t”.

The study resulted in the following:  The population growth rates of the suburbs are much higher than those of the major 4 cities.

 The impact of distance was null in Amman and Irbid while it was highly effective in the case of Zarqa & Russiefeh.

Finally the author recommends: a) Investment & development should be implemented in the medium & small towns as well as governorates centers.

b) Conducting research study on fertility in the major cities.
