Abstract EN

The Modern Coranic Schools represented a funny experience in Tunisia during the time of colonization, they were thought of in order to provide educational opportunities for Tunisian children who did not find a place for themselves at the end of the nineteenth century, then they developed to become a serious competitor for public education.

Despite its modest beginning in 1907 at the initiative of a group of Tunisian elite and specifically of the Tunisian youth movement led by Khairullah Bin Mustafaand and Bashir Sfar, and with the support of the Association of Religious Endowments, the experience soon witnessed a remarkable development.

The civil school of Sidi Ben Arous in Tunis represented an example that was emulated in more than one part of the country, so similar experiences appeared in Bizerte, Sousse, Monastir, Kairouan, Gabes and Djerba.

Although all varieties of education in Tunisia during the French colonization was one of the prerogatives of the public education administration legally and theoretically, the latter merely contended itself with monitoring the evolution of modern coranic schools project at the beginning, and it was perhaps surprised by the success that was achieved, and worked to attack it sometimes and contain it sometime other times until the phase of national independence.

At that time, all modern coranic schools were nationalized and thus represented an important nucleus in the infrastructure to the School of Independence
