Abstract EN

Due to the splendor and luxury attained by the Umayyad state in al-Andalus, the practice of concealing the ruler behind screens was considered to be of great importance in official celebrations, religious ceremonies, and during the reception and sending-off of armies.

When the oath of allegiance was given to a new ruler, the most important men of state were temporarily given the task of shielding the caliph behind curtains during the entry of visitors and well-wishers.

These sessions required a special arrangement as each person had his assigned place.
