Abstract EN

This paper studies the foreign policy of the People’s Republic of China towards Iraq.

It analyzes the different elements that shape China’s interest in Iraq.

It argues that China’s policy toward Iraq since the United States-led invasion of that country has been mainly guided by practical considerations rather than ideological considerations.

Political, economic, and security factors have become China’s main determinants in its policy towards Iraq, replacing the old determinants of China’s foreign policy towards Iraq, namely the ideological commitment to fight Western imperialism and Soviet reactionaries.
