Abstract EN

This research aims at collecting hadiths that were explicitly judged by Imam Abu Dawoud as mursal in his Sunan, whether to be by him or transmitted from other scholars.

This is to illustrate the meaning of mursal according to Abi Dawoud and other early hadith scholars, and to check whether it is different with recent scholars.

There is no doubt that this can only be done by studying the approach of early scholars in their voluminous works, as it is the most accurate and fair way to uncover the meanings of hadith terms, especially those which are stable and widely spread in recent times.

However, this was the only method to know what the early scholars meant by their terms, because they did not attend to establishing rules, reporting and setting limits.

As the terms were clear in their minds, so there was no need to clarify them.

But, as time passed and the diligence to catch up with them weakened, we needed to know their meaning.

Thus, it was necessary to refer to their approaches in their works, through which we know their purposes and clarify what they meant according to them and the importance and consideration they represent.

For this purpose, the research starts with a brief biography of Imam Abi Dawoud, which tackles his personal biography and scholarly life.

Then, it describes his famous book “as-Sunan”, an encyclopedic work on Islam, which is considered as one of the ways to know the limit of mursal according to him through collecting mursal hadiths in this book.
