Through the past years, the researchers’, the educational policy makers’ and the high education leaders’ concern about the role that universities can play in the society in addition to the traditional functions of the universities in the education and the scientific research has increased.

This concern is based on the various benefits resulting from the engagement of the universities in the society such as developing the conscious and the feeling with the civil and social responsibility, improving the quality of the educational process, guiding the scientific research to advantage the society and contributing in developing the local communities and supplying their needs.

This concern has resulted in the emergence of new concepts that express the civil role of the universities and their function in the community engagement such as the concepts of “Civic university”, “community-engaged university” and “civically engaged university”.

This research aimed to explore the concept, nature and mechanisms of the community-engaged universities and their in the light of a number of current global experiences.

Accordingly, the following questions were formed: 1- What is the concept and nature of the universities community engagement?, 2- What are the roles and responsibilities of the leadership in of the universities community engagement?, 3- What are the main global experiences in the field of the universities community engagement that can be benefited from (used) in the Egyptian high education? 4- What are the learned lessons from the global experiences in the universities community engagement?.

This research is considered a documentary ...

depending on the analysis of the literature and the documents related to the experiences of some countries and global universities in the field of supporting the community and civil engagement of the universities.

Through viewing the concept and nature of the community engagement, and some global experiences in the field the most important learned lessons were extracted such as: the need to reform the data of the mission, the message and the values for the Egyptian Universities so that it emphasizes explicitly on the civil and community engagement, the fact that achieving the concept of the civilly-engaged university in the Egyptian high education requires applying innovative leadership techniques that should be applied and train the university leaderships on them such as the techniques of the distributive leadership, the participatory leadership, servant leadership and the informal leadership in addition to the need to acquire certain leadership skills such as the skills of negotiation, conflict management, community partnership management and the effective communication with the civil and local community organizations.
