This research aims to recognize the effectiveness of using thinking maps and writing activities in teaching sociology on social concepts and growth the habits of mind and raised the level of self-efficacy for secondary school students.

To achieve this goal, the researcher access to the literature and previous studies on the thinking maps and the writing to learning approach , did an exploratory study include conducting some personal interviews with both students and teachers and observe behavior of students in sociology classes, note the methods used by teachers in teaching as well as applied some measures and tests for students to find out the awareness and understanding of students' social concepts, as well as the habits of mind and the amount of their sense of self-efficacy, Choosing one unit from Sociology text book, analyze its content to stand on the social concepts in it, Preparing the teacher guide for the unit and Student's Guide for tasks and activities according to thinking maps and writing activities, Preparing the research tools included (concepts test, Habits of Mind test, self-efficacy scale), Choosing a random sample from the second year secondary schools in one of the Suez govemorate schools, Divided the sample into two groups ( The first one is experimental group which study the unit according to the thinking maps and writing activities and the second group is the controlled group which study the same unit but by using the prevailing methods), Applied pre- tools of the research on two groups , Teaching the unit to experimental and controlled groups, Applied post-tools of the research(after having finished the process of teaching )on two groups .

The findings revealed that there are significant difference between the means score of the experimental group which studied the unit in the thinking maps and writing activities and the controlling group which studied the same unit but by using the prevailing methods in the post concepts test and post habits of mind test and the self-efficacy scale for the experimental group.
