Abstract EN

The study was conducted on three hybrids of watermelon seeds (Ambala, Raad, Vuotora) in Plant Physiology Laboratory, at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Damascus during 2014 – 2015 to determine the effect of different concentrations of sodium chloride (0, 50, 100, 150 mML-1 ) on germination percentage and speed, radicle length, hypocotyl length, and dry weight.

The germination was done in Petri dishes under controlled conditions.

The experiment was designed according to the simple completely randomized with three replicates per treatment, distributed on three dishes for each hybrid.

Results showed that Vuotora hybrid was the best in speed germination, radicle length, hypocotyl length and dry weight (0.96 day.seed-1 , 2.47 cm, 1.86 cm, 4.3 mg respectively), while the hybrid Raad recorded the highest germination percentage (75%) compared to other hybrids.

Germination rates decreased with salt concentration increase up to 150 mmL-1 (25.56%) compared to control (96.67%).Germination speed, radicle length, hypocotyls length and dry weight decreased with increasing salt concentration up to 150 mML -1 and the reduction in radicle length was 76.4% compared to the control, Which coincided with a decrease in hypocotyl length and dry weight by 88.69 and 91.81 % respectively.
