Abstract EN

The aim of this research was to study the land use and determine soil productivity of the pilot area in Orontes Basin using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS).Data base and maps of study area are prepared and 150 observation points were selected in the field using GPS device and the current land use was recorded.

41soil profiles were also were selected, depending on satellite images of the area and prepared in certain sites.

Soil profiles were morphologically described and soil samples were systematically collected for laboratory analysis.

Productivity Index (IP) was calculated according to FAO and the suitability of the soil was identified depending on the results of field studies and laboratory analysis.

Results showed that the studied soils were classified to the following subgroups: Typic Calcixerepts, Typic Haploxerepts, Lithic Xerorthents, Chromic Haploxererts and the current land use was unsuitable in many sites as a result of misuse.

Maps of land use, soil and soil suitability were also prepared using remote sensing and GIS techniques.
