Abstract EN

This study sought to examine the relationship between mental and emotional intelligence and academic and emotional problems among students of different grade levels )i.e., seventh, eighth, eleventh and twelfth( in the Sultanate of Oman.

It also aimed at exploring possible gender and grade level differences in the study’s main variables.

Raven matrices, an emotional intelligence scale, and a questionnaire on academic and emotional problems were administered to a study sample of 2628 male and female students.

Regression analysis showed that mental intelligence signifcantly predicted academic problems while emotional intelligence was not statistically signifcant.

However, emotional intelligence was found to signifcantly predict emotional problems while mental intelligence was not statistically signifcant.

There were also signifcant differences on the levels of emotional problems, mental and emotional intelligence, in favor of females.

Male students scored higher in academic problems.

Oneway analyses showed statistically-signifcant differences in all the study variables in favor of high grades.
