Starting from the assumption that traditional psychological tests are fairly limited in measuring the learning aptitude of children with limited mental capacities, this research paper attempts to develop a strategy to uncover some of these capacities according to an observation network of gestural, oral and graphical characteristics of their behaviour during some daily life and scholastic activities.
This will be conducted through the adoption of an ethocognitive approach that uses methodologies pertaining to psychology and ethology.
The samples include 74 Tunisian children from centres for the mentally retarded in Sfax having an observation network of their behaviour in its different aspects, free drawings, and subjected to Santucci's perceptive organization of drawings test.
We compared their results with those of a group of 78 Tunisian children of ordinary development studying at Kindergarten.
The analytical results of the observation network of the different aspects of the gestural, oral, and graphical behaviour of the mentally retarded under consideration allowed us to identify the percentage of their success in scholastic learning (handwriting, arithmetic, music and children songs, craft and design, scientific initiation, reading and writing…) and daily life learning (using the senses: touch, smell, hearing, taste; and practical activities...).
