Abstract EN

Many Arabic novels of the contemporary literature have leaned towards assigning the role of protagonist to something instead of assigning it to someone as the case with classical novels.

it is some kind of surrender to the persistence of the topic on the innovator.

when “the thing” which could be an event, a feeling or an attitude, is the centre of the action in the novel and its objective, we find the innovator gives it the role of the protagonist which moves the events and leads it instead of being an influenced part of the novel or one of the results, the same as the role of the classical protagonist.

from this perspective, changing the protagonist into something, which means, assigning the role of the protagonist in the Arabic novel to a “thing” instead of assigning it to a person, is a justifiable phenomenon in the contemporary Arabic novel.

in this study i have chosen examples from five Arab countries: (Palestine, Morocco, Jordan and Saudi Arabia) as a representation of this phenomenon, they are: the novel of “The Dark Eye” for the Palestinian novelist Zakaria Mohamed, the novel of “My Tormentor”: for Bensalem Hamish and the novel of “The Guard of the Lost City” for Ibrahim Nassralla, the novel of the “Apartment” for the Saudi novelist Ghazi Al Kussaibi and the novel of “the Seven Kawarems of Love” for the Moroccan Novelist Jamal Bou Teeb.
