Abstract EN

The current study aims at examining the definition of “Lexicography” in Yaqut Ai- Hamawi’s “The Dictionary of Countries.” Building dictionaries has become a separate and independent branch of knowledge.

It has its own principles, methods and tools that should be met while building a dictionary, such as clarifying the objectives behind building a dictionary, illustrating the method of classification of entries inside the dictionary, and providing simple and clear definitions.

The dictionary should also contain enough lexical, morphological and syntactic guidelines that facilitate using the dictionary.

The researcher claims that all these modern methods and tools can be easily found in Yaqut Al- Hamawi’s “The Dictionary of Countries.” In spite of the great number of dictionaries and glossaries that had been built by Arabs long time ago, the researcher could trace an Arab theory or a line of thought in building dictionaries.
