Abstract EN

This paper aims to illuminate the cultural dimension and its impact on housing formation in the old city of Omdurman through addressing patterns of spatial distribution of residential buildings in the city at large to define the factors that contributed to its formation.

It also aims to study the city's culture and its contribution to the formation of spatial distribution patterns that adhere to it’s character and heritage.

The study mainly tries to answer the following questions: 1.

Is there any type of cultural rules that govern the spatial distribution of residential buildings in the old city of Omdurman? 2.

Is there any sort of consideration to the nature of interior spaces and functional linkages to other spaces in the spatial distribution process? The study follows a historical, descriptive and analytical approach to describe and analyze the study’s purposive sample.

The sample consisted of six models which represent the majority of spatial distribution patterns.

in accordance with the accepted standards in qualitative research.

Results show that the contrasting ethnic and cultural nature of the old city of Omdurman has a clear role on the creation of spatial distribution patterns which are contrasting and simultaneously similar.
