Mitochondrial DNA (mt-DNA) mutations contribute to metabolic disorders and cancer.

Recent studies tend to investigate the importance of mt-DNA in tumors, and since there are no mt-DNA studies in Syria, we aimed to search for mt-DNA indicators that might be present in breast cancer by detecting mutations frequency in a region of mitochondrial DNA containing mitochondrially encoded tRNA isoleucine MT-TI, mitochondrially encoded tRNA glutamine MT-TQ and mitochondrially encoded tRNA methionine MT- TM genes, in addition to a part of mitochondrially encoded NADH dehydrogenase 2 gene MT-ND2 in 20 Syrian breast cancer patients using DNA sequencing.

We found 10 polymorphisms in 19/20 patients.

The polymorphism A4769G was the most frequent one which might indicate a higher risk for developing breast cancer, and we didn’t find somatic mutations in the studied genes.
