Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease that is characterized by an aberrant response to dietary gluten in genetically susceptible individuals that results in small intestinal injury and can be associated with diverse systemic consequences.

CD usually is treated by a gluten-free diet (GFD); however; ongoing pharmacological; vaccine trials and new diagnostic methods hold promise for the future.
