Abstract EN

During the second half of the nineteenth century, the Western coast of the Mediterranean was full of maritime traffic, and the European ships sailing there were not immune to the piratical attacks of Moroccan rural tribes.

Many merchant ships were subjected to naval raids that often ended with the captivity or sometimes killing of some Europeans.

The attack on the famous Dutch ship called "Anna" on April 28, 1895 on the coast of Al Hoceima by an armed group of the people of the rural village of Beqiwa was one of the most prominent operations carried out against the European ships in the Mediterranean coast during the aforementioned period.

Indeed, this attack created a strong reaction in the Dutch circles almost endangering the future of diplomatic relations between Morocco and the Netherlands.

As a result, Morocco had to comply with the conditions of the Dutch pay heavy financial compensation to the families of the victims.

Thus, in this study, we will shed light on this piratical event and its implications for the bilateral relations between the two countries, relying on the documents of the National Archives in The Hague, which are valuable documents that were then written by the Dutch and Moroccan side.
