Tourism is a thriving industry in terms of growth and economic importance in the world, especially in developing countries such as Algeria, which must rely on tourism as a tributary of economic and social growth.
However, given the dynamic nature of tourism needs, tourism products continue to grow, develop and diversify.
One of these new tourism products is sports tourism, which is one of the fastest growing products in the tourism sector and is increasingly concerned with its social impacts (Witzche & Woll, 2010), and due to the high demand for various forms of sports tourism, it has become an important element in almost all tourist areas and an important part of the regional socio economic development program in many areas, especially in areas that rely on sports tourism (Tuppen, 2000).
Sport and tourism are distinct but interrelated socio cultural events of a society.
There are different types of sports, both outdoors and indoors.
They include golf, tennis, surfing, swimming, mountaineering, skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking, prospecting, ball games and athletics, among others (McIntosh & Goeldner, 1990).
Algeria today is a real tourist destination that has not yet been exploited enough, unlike other countries in the Mediterranean region.
Algeria has a huge tourist potential that can give birth to a large and prosperous tourism industry, a 1622 km coastal strip, snow covered mountains in winter, wide plains, diverse forests and highlands, as well as the largest desert in the world.
It is full of historical and archaeological treasures that are worth discovering.
These assets enable it to become a major destination for coastal tourism, green tourism or cultural, historical and sporting tourism.
This is the biggest challenge that makes Algeria the first tourist destination in the Mediterranean basin at least.
What strategy should be followed by the tourism sector in Algeria to succeed in raising this challenge? What are the most important products for sports tourism that are compatible with the potential of Algeria and which can be relied upon? This study will try to answer these questions and then propose the most important products for sports tourism in Algeria and the strategy used to promote sports tourism in Algeria.
