Abstract EN

During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, shipbuilding in Europe was active and maritime transport flourished, accompanied by the development of textile factories, which, thanks to the adoption of new technologies, increased the quantity and quality of production.

Europeans became dependent on textiles to expand their trade, and cloths became an alternative to currency in the European commerce with the Mamluk sultanate.

This article examines the factors that helped the Europeans develop their trade with the Levant; they finally imposed almost full control on the markets in the sultanate.

It also analyses how cloths formed the basis of European exports to the Mamluk sultanate even though other goods and products were not available in the Levant.
