It is well known that the Portuguese were the first in the field of modern colonialism due to several factors that helped them.

The first factor is that Portugal is a coastal country and their government pay more attention to sail and ride the high seas by supplying maps of the waterways and sea routes.

In addition to that, their government took care of the experts in navigation as well as providing the navigational tools which considered developed at that time.

The spirit of adventure and love of wealth played a crucial role in the leadership of the Portuguese to the area to get the colonies in addition to the religious reason which represented by the Crusader spirit.

Basrah was very important area in the international and regional conflict in the Arabian Gulf region.

Accordingly, different forms of the relationship between the Portuguese and Basrah which had begun when a Portuguese traveler passed Basrah then the relation evolved into business one then it soon turned into a military clash, because the Portuguese tried to impose their control on Basrah by force, but the Safavids who ruled Iran encouraged the Portuguese in establishing good relations with Basrah which became a key base for commercial activity and missionary in the Arabian Gulf region.
