The objectives of transitional justice vary according to contextual factors; however, they may have some consistent characteristics: recognition of the dignity of individuals; fairness; recognition of violations and the objective of preventing them occurring again.

This is because of the magnitude of the violations and the context of the fragility of the society, which guarantees the opportunity to deal with the gross violations of human rights, thus providing a framework that refers to the restoration of an important part of the life of any society.

The treatment of violations brings openness, new trends and an opportunity to engage new sectors of society, including women and others who have been excluded.

The value and sustainability of transitional justice efforts in this context depends largely on the participation of people outside the political and economic structures of power, which means bypassing elite and private interests; victims and other marginalized groups should be involved in identifying the best ways to address the massive human rights failures to build a safer future for them.
