Abstract EN

This study aims to highlight to what extent the national identity variable determines Turkish foreign policy since 2002.

Turkey?s dominant national identity reflects a mix of modern, secular and the occidental culture and a traditional Ottoman and Islamic identity i.e.

a "neo-Ottoman" identity.

This synthesis of traditional and modern identity that began to appear since the 1980's, has grown significantly when the "Justice and Development Party" (AKP) took office after 2002 elections.

A secular party which with strong roots in political Islam, something that fueled its popularity ever after.

This Neo-Ottomanism has had impacts on Turkey's foreign policy choices, as it contributed to a significant improvement of its relations with the Muslim world, while maintaining good relations with the West as dictated by its national interests.
