This study deals with the system of the protection of confidential information under the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention, given the fact that the protection of confidentiality is one of the most important aspects addressed by the Convention, and is critically important for effective verification of compliance with its provisions.

States Parties need to get strong safeguards to prevent the disclosure of sensitive information relating to national security, or to the business sector, and that this information will be properly protected by the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

In order to ensure the protection of confidential information, the Organization has established a stringent system to govern the handling of classified information by the Technical Secretariat, as well as a set of rules and mechanisms to deal with different types of violations.
