Abstract EN

The study aims to identify the nature of the buildings and the furniture used in the public libraries in Sudan and to identify the extent of their conformity or lack of conformity with the required standards in this regard.

The study deals with the concept of standards and their models for buildings and furniture, and identifies the obstacles that prevent the application of the standards adopted in the libraries in question.

The researchers used the analytical descriptive approach, the survey method and the review questions, as well as the observations of researchers through direct visits to identify the reality in the sample study libraries, namely the public libraries in Khartoum and Sinnar states.

The study found that the majority of library buildings were not originally designed to be a library.

The optimum distribution of halls and reading rooms was not considered to meet the actual needs of existing or potential beneficiaries, especially the elderly, children and people with special needs.

The same applies to furniture in its various forms.

The problems of non-implementation of the standards are due to the almost total absence of the culture of the public library in the society, the lack of formal interest by the local authorities and the standards regulating its services.
